About Our History
Back in 2008, ONYX Founder and CEO, Reneé Matthews, owned a business that she started when her oldest son was starting college. As a single Mom, she thought that an online business would be a good source of extra income and could help with tuition and books. She researched products, attended trade shows, and built relationships with vendors. She opened a merchant account, got an 800 number, made catalogs from scratch and built a website. Her friends and family were very supportive and helped as best they could to spread the word, but her budget for advertising was very limited.
She had great products, gave amazing customer service and had an online store, but how would the world know she existed? It was then that she began to understand and appreciate the power of marketing and how quickly a business could fail without it. Sadly, within two years of starting the business, she had to close it.
Reneé’s experience left her armed with a passion for Web Design and Development, Branding and Marketing – the services upon which ONYX Digital Space was built. Her drive is in educating and helping other small businesses sprout, grow and blossom to their full potential. She is always honored and humbled to be part of the journey from concept to planning to realization.
Reneé is the proud Mom of three, GrandMa of two, Human to a furbaby, Devon’s other half, official nerdy chick, digital nomad, serial foodie, lover of Mac-n-Cheese, Cannolis, Tacos and Tiramisu and a travel addict!
